DM74ALS541N Application Field and Working Principle

The DM74ALS541N is a logic buffer, driver, receiver, and transceiver. It is a general-purpose multichannel buffer/driver/receiver device made of silicon gates CMOS technology for high speed and low power operation. The DM74ALS541N provides six independent buffers/drivers, one receiver, and one transceiver with three inputs and three outputs. All six buffers/drivers can be used as either three-state buffers/drivers or as active-state changers.

This device is designed to operate over the wide range of voltages, from 4.5V to 15V, very low power consumption of less than 50µA, and fast switching times of typically less than 4ns. The DM74ALS541N meets the supply voltage requirements of the TTL logic families. The device contains very low ON-state resistance, typically 0.93Ω, and massive wiring capabilities of up to 3A. The device consists of an active low logic input circuit, an output circuit, and an enable circuit.

Applications

The DM74ALS541N is ideal for high-speed applications, such as character generation and communications interfaces. The device also offers excellent quality video and audio performance. The direct data inputs and outputs make the device a suitable choice for high speed, large fan-out, very low power consumption, and large package applications. Typical applications include memory interfaces, I/O buffering, logic level shifting, processor buffering and clocking, as well as multiplexing.

Working Principle

The logic input circuit consists of three input gates. Each of these gates responds to the logical level at their respective inputs. If the input is driven ‘high’, the gate output will be 0, and if the input is driven low then the gate output will be 1. The output circuit consists of six 3-state buffers, one receiver and one transceiver which drive the outputs. The enable circuit is responsible for activating or disabling the three-state buffers. When the enable is set to ‘high’, the buffer is enabled and its output will be in accordance with the logic level of its respective logical inputs. When the enable is set to ‘low’, the buffer will be disabled and its output will be a high impedance state.

The receiver circuit consists of two operational amplifiers primarily used as comparators. The receiver compares the logic level of the three inputs, and outputs a logic high when the logic level is all 0s, and will output a logic low if the logic level is anything other than 0s. The transceiver circuit consists of two comparators which are used to compare two input levels, and the output is a logic 1 when the two inputs are equal, and the output is a logic 0 if the inputs are not equal.

The DM74ALS541N offers very low power consumption and fast switching speed, and is capable of driving large currents. The direct data inputs and outputs and the wide range of supply voltage ratings make it a perfect choice for a variety of applications. The device is also equipped with built-in protection diodes to protect the input from ruthing currents and reverse voltages.
