Film capacitors, sometimes known as plastic film capacitors, are virtually non-polarized capacitors and are generally the preferred choice when stability and reliability are of the utmost importance. The working principle for the DME2P22K-F incorporated in a film capacitor is the alternating movement of charge carriers from the area of higher potential to the area of lower potential wherein there is a finite amount of energy storage. The dielectric material used in this case is a plastic film and the electrodes are perforated metal plates. The metal plates are placed on either side of the plastic film and a charge is applied to the two plates that creates an electrostatic field. The plastic film works as a membrane and acts as an insulator between the two metal plates, thereby interrupting their electrical conductivity. When a voltage is applied to the two metal plates, the plastic film generates an electrical field and thereby a storage capacity. This storage of charge is what we refer to as dielectric capacity or the capacitance of the film capacitor.
