DP83846AVHG/NOPB is a type of network interface controller which supports 10/100Mbps Ethernet over high-speed fibre and copper links. It is a single-chip transceiver solution, including a media access controller (MAC), physical layer device (PHY) and a bus interface unit (BIU). It is designed to provide both cost-effective and robust Gigabit performance over standard 1-lb category 5 twisted pair copper media. The DP83846AVHG/NOPB is an advanced high-speed (HS) low-power (LP) Ethernet solution for mobile, wireless and desktop applications. Its unique design combines the power savings of high-speed operation, coupled with the added flexibility of low-power mode operation, reducing the average power consumed by Ethernet links.

Working Principle

The DP83846AVHG/NOPB is a single-chip transceiver solution which combines a media access controller (MAC), physical layer device (PHY) and a bus interface unit (BIU). The MAC is responsible for data packet transmission and reception and for performing address recognition and filtering. It supports full-duplex operation at up to 1000 Mbps on a single twisted pair cable or multiple pairs of HSSD (high-speed switched digital) cables.

The physical layer device (PHY) of the DP83846AVHG/NOPB transceiver solution performs the encoding and decoding of information on the electrical signals and performs the physical layer operations such as scrambling, descrambling, formatting and Error detection. These operations are performed over the basic mode as described in IEEE802.3ab. The PHY also works with the MAC to provide link auto-negotiation.
