The DS1251WP-C02+ Real Time Clock (RTC) provides an energy-efficient, time-keeping solution for encryption, remote data storage, robotics, automation, and industry-level equipment. Ideal for digital benchmarking and authentication, the integrated CMOS clock operates over a wide temperature range and the extreme low-power consumption make the DS1251WP-C02+ an attractive option for embedded applications. Additionally, the RTC can provide voltage and temperature monitoring, battery power control and other extended capabilities.
DS1251WP-C02+ Applications
The DS1251WP-C02+ is most commonly found in the automotive, alarm and security, medical, industrial, and communications sectors. Interfacing with traditional real-time clocks, the integrated low voltage detector helps maintain battery life in embedded applications by automatically reducing clock speed when voltage levels become too low. Additionally, the integrated temperature detector helps to monitor large temperature ranges common to outdoor applications.
The DS1251WP-C02+ comes as an SMT type device with operating temperature range of -40 to +85 °C, and maximum operating current of 55mA. It also offers a power-saving shutdown mode after RAM data is retained. This makes the device suitable for applications where uninterrupted clock operation or frequent data downloads are required.
DS1251WP-C02+ Working Principle
The DS1251WP-C02+ uses a power-efficient real-time clock (RTC) to keep track of time with single time setting, long-term time keeping, and optional accuracy corrections. Its design leverages an oscillator circuit, logic and control elements, RAM, and an integrated extended register to provide accurate time keeping. The clock uses an internal 3.3V supply and generates a 48-bit counter that can count up to 1024 seconds. A single time setting allows the clock to be adjusted instantly while the long-term time keeping enables precise time setting over the years. Using an external crystal, the one-time setting can be accurate up to 1 minute/year.
For additional accuracy and long-term time keeping, the DS1251WP-C02+ offers an optional accuracy corrections service. A built-in correction block along with captive polysilicon resistor elements provide an accuracy of ±10 ppm over the full operating temperature range. Using an external crystal and synchronized resistor, the clock can reach up to ±2ppm accuracy.
The clock also comes with a temperature sensor that allows the device to automatically adjust the performance of the clock in case of large temperature variation. An integrated watchdog timer and internal SRAM help to detect a problem with the system and allow the clock to restart.
The DS1251WP-C02+ is an ideal choice for applications that require high performance and reliable timekeeping in harsh environments.
