DS12885SN+

The DS12885SN+ is a highly integrated 24-hour real time clock and calendar circuit with additional RAM and Control lines, based on Motorola\'s MC146818A "smart" peripheral device. It provides key functions that can be found in today\'s mainstream embedded real-time applications, including Personal Computers, Industrial PCs, Instrumentation, Measurement and Control.

The DS12885SN+ is capable of providing year, month, date, day of week, hour, minute, and second information and of controlling the time-of-day interrupts. The time and calendar functions are powered by an external 32.768 kHz oscillator crystal, while the Vcc supply powers all other functions and the RAM. The DS12885SN+ also includes the chip enable control line (WCE#) to provide added isolation and security to the Data and Address bus access. A contact bounce-free input, designated OSC#, allows for less demanding intervals and ensures reliable operation when used with external switches such as an oscillator enable and halt switch.

The DS12885SN+ offers a wide range of features to address today’s real-time clock/calendar needs. It provides multiple time-of-day interrupts, daylight savings time operation and leap year compensation. The first time-of-day interrupt can be programmed with up to 15 minutes accuracy. The second time-of-day interrupt can be programmed with the same accuracy comprising of a repeating interval and the counter can be programmed with a count rate of 1 second or any other combination of 1 minute, 1 hour and 1 day up to 65, 535 minutes, 16,384 hours, or 2,147,483,647 days. The leap year/century operation is selectable through software and requires no manual intervention.

In addition to the clock/calendar function, the DS12885SN+ includes an additional control line that provides the flexibility to achieve end user applications such as home automation management, electronic door locks customer access control and electronic billing systems. By implementing additional programming, the DS12885SN+ can be used to generate appropriate reminders to the user as well as customized alarms.

The DS12885SN+ has also been designed to comply with the Safety-Critical Developments for the Embedded Systems market, such as medical industry, manufacturing industry and automation industry. Its design features include Single Event Upset (SEU) recognition, for improved protection against cosmic radiation events, and low-Vcc operations to prevent false triggering of alarms.
