Real-time clock (RTC), also known as hardware clock, is used for accurate time measurement, including calendar and clock display, alarm, countdown/countup clock, automatic control and frequency domain system. DS1646-120+ is a real-time clock chip from Maxim Integrated Co. Ltd. It combines the functions of digital watch and count down / count up in a single chip. Working Principle
The DS1646-120+ is designed to provide both processor-interfacing real-time clocks and calendar timers. It could supply both real-time clock (RTC) and calendar functions such as time/date reminder, alarm setting, and frequency domain system. The operating principle of DS1646-120+ is based on digital measurement. The clock chip is able to store the digital information such as time and calendar information in its memory, and convert them into equivalent analog signals during time measurement and calendar calculation. The DS1646-120+ incorporates a 32kHz crystal oscillator for the time base and ultra-low power CMOS for its circuits. Its internal registers can be operated within a wide 7V to 3.3V supply range with microamperes current consumption.
The real-time clock can also be set using software, which is called setting-time. Setting-time operation is activated by providing a low pulse signal to the cycle control pin. Setting-time can be used for updating the century register, or for simple updating of the time/date registers. If setting-time is activated during a leap-year, the month and day registers will automatically be corrected.
