DS1685EN-5+ devices are clock/timing Real Time Clocks (RTCs) that provide an accurate, low power, and low cost method for tracking time information and maintaining a calendar in systems. These devices feature an integrated RTC with a backup battery input and a reduced set of external components.

The DS1685EN-5+ applications include providing an accurate source of time and date for a wide variety of systems, and helping to reduce system power consumption by providing a real-time clock signal for RTC-based functional control. working principle
The DS1685EN-5+ features a CMOS-compatible oscillator, as well as an on-chip buffered backup battery input. It has a programmable timer, a 256-byte page mode, and an 8-bit oscillator accuracy that ensures a valid time base. It also features a century count facility, leap year detection, and an end-of-month replay feature. It is designed to operate with a 3.0V supply and can be used with a 2.2V or 3.3V CMOS logic family.

The time and date data are held in a three-byte register. When the registers are read, the device looks for the valid bit and if it is set, then the RTC is set to 0 and the time is read from the register. The last register contains the valid bit, but is not required as a read operation will detect the valid bit and reset it. The device records the time and date on each write and is available from the register upon a later read.

The DS1685EN-5+ is equipped with an event interrupt capability, which is used to detect the 32kHz crystal cycle rate. It has three programmable alarms, which generate an interrupt when matching time and date have been detected. The device can also be used to accurately interpolate the time when an external crystal or oscillator is connected.
