Clock/Timing - Real Time Clocks
The DS1687-5IND+ is a high-performance real-time clock (RTC) and calendar module specifically designed for microcontroller, server and embedded systems applications. The DS1687-5IND+ is a complete, dual-channel RTC integrated circuit for real-time, timekeeping and calendar applications.
DS1687-5IND+ Features
The DS1687-5IND+ has many features, including:

DS1687-5IND+ Application Field
The DS1687-5IND+ is used in many industrial and consumer applications. These include: metering, data acquisition, embedded systems, server applications, medical equipment, consumer electronics, office automation, factory automation, audio/speech-based applications, and automotive systems.
DS1687-5IND+ Working Principle
The DS1687-5IND+ consists of two independent real-time clocks (RTC), a single crystal oscillator, a 64-bit system timer, and a 4-wire, SPI-compatible interface. The clocks are powered by the crystal oscillator, and each RTC is configured to count the time specified by its own clock settings. The clocks keep accurate time, even when the system power is off. When the system is powered on, the clocks start running, and the time and date values are read and written via the 4-wire, SPI-compatible interface.
The 64-bit system timer operates based on the same 32.768 kHz crystal. It provides a fast and accurate timing reference for the two clocks. This system timer can be programmed to generate interrupt events or alarms for specific events or 0.25 second intervals. The flexible programmable interrupts and alarms are used to generate system interrupt events or scheduler alarms.
The DS1687-5IND+ also provides a programmable input/output (I/O) port for system configuration and control. This I/O port enables system designers to monitor and control peripherals. In addition, it can be used to provide a secure, reliable connection to memory ICs and other external devices.
