PMIC - Supervisors devices are an important component in modern day electronics applications. They provide fail safe circuitry that protects components from damage due to power supply transients, reverse-currents, over-voltage and over-temperature conditions. The DS1708EUA+T&R (Redefined) is an existing device from Maxim Integrated that provides high-accuracy, low-power, thermal protection, and over-voltage protection for various types of applications. In this article, we will explore how the DS1708EUA+T&R works, what types of application it can be used in, and how to properly connect and configure it.
Unlike most Supervisor devices, the DS1708EUA+T&R uses a combination of integrated circuitry and discrete components to provide fault protection. This hybrid-protection solution enables high accuracy, low power operation. At the heart of this device is a voltage regulator/comparator that monitors the input voltage, and compares it to one or more set points in order to determine the safety of the system. Simultaneously, an over-voltage circuit monitors and detects any occurrence of over-voltage condition across the input power supply. An over-temperature circuit also monitors the temperature of the device and trips the output if it senses any abnormally high temperature conditions.
The DS1708EUA+T&R provides exceptional accuracy and can be used in a wide variety of applications, including microprocessor power supplies, communication and mobile internet systems, e-readers, digital set-top boxes, inkjet printers and military and aerospace applications that require strict power regulation standards. The device is designed to provide microprocessor reset protection in application, with an adjustable reset timeout interval. On the other hand, the device can also be used to prove over voltage protections in application that require high level of fault protection.
The DS1708EUA+T&R device includes two pins for monitoring and providing output signal. The reset output pin is used to initiate reset action when the monitored voltage exceeds the device\'s threshold limit. The reset output is active high when the threshold exceeds and goes active as long as the threshold remains active. The over-voltage output pin is used to indicate over-voltage is detected when the device is enabled. The output will go low when the over-voltage condition is detected.
The DS1708EUA+T&R has two other pins, one used to enable the device and the other to disable it. The enable pin is an open-drain line and requires an external pull-up resistor to provide logic level action. The disable pin is floating and requires an external pull-up resistor to provide logic level action. The enable pin may also be used to bypass or disable the device. When Bypass/disable is active, the reset and over-voltage outputs will maintain its previous status, no matter what the voltage conditions are. This feature is typically used to reset the controller or for emergency reset of the system.
Connecting the DS1708EUA+T&R to a circuit is relatively straightforward, as the device only requires a few external components to configure. Typically, the device is connected to the voltage input of the system, with a ground connection from the system’s ground point. A reset circuit is then connected to the reset pin of the device, with a pull-up resistor between the reset pin and Vcc connected. The over-voltage circuit is connected between Vcc and OverVolt pin of the device, and the enable/disable pin has a pull-up resistor connected between it and Vcc. The power-on circuit is then connected between Vcc and Enable/Disable pin.
When the DS1708EUA+T&R is properly connected and configured, it will automatically monitor the voltage input of the system and provide reset, overvoltage and over-temperature protection as needed. This high-accuracy, low-power device is an ideal solution for protecting against transient over-voltages and providing accurate reset control for microprocessor applications.
