PMIC (Power management integrated circuits) is an electronic component designed to provide power regulation and control for all component within a microprocessor system. These circuits serve a diverse function from voltage regulation and system power on/off control to less critical, yet still important steady voltage consumption for such component as DRAM. Among the range of PMIC are supervisors, for example the DS1832S/T&R.
The DS1832S/T&R is a dual power supervisor that acts as an adapter between the microprocessor system and its environment by monitoring the external supplies, the microprocessor’s voltage levels, temperature, and other conditions. The monitoring functions depend on the customer-defined factory configuration. When any of these conditions are out of range, the chip holds the microprocessor in reset until the condition is restored.
One of the application fields of the DS1832S/T&R is extending the battery life of portable applications. As the chip monitors both the battery and the input supplies, the battery life can be extended for much longer periods of time. Thus, the chip helps the customer to keep their system running longer with less interruption, whether from sleep periods or from power-on reset events.
The DS1832S/T&R supports a wide range of power management capabilities that can be modified for specific application requirements. The chip supports two primary power rails (VCC and VCCSTBY), and several secondary power rails can be connected to the VCCSTBY pin depending upon on-board logic topology and system requirements. Also, the supply sequencing features of the chip allow the user to pre-configure the voltage ramping to ensure a reliable startup even in the presence of brown-outs or other power supply disturbances. In addition, the power-on reset timing and threshold can be adjusted to account for various conditions that may be encountered in unique applications.
The DS1832S/T&R\'s low-power shut-down mode further extends the battery life by being able to dynamically enter a low power mode during system idle periods. Meanwhile, the built-in programmable reset timer (PRT) allows user to set the reset pulse width. This simple customizeable feature allows system to optimize the reset timing and minimize their power consumption.
The DS1832S/T&R also supports an array of onboard status and control flags. It provides a wide range of operating temperature and supply voltage ranges to cover most application requirements. In addition, it can be used to monitor the supply voltage on VCC during power on, while the thermal monitor flags the system when the junction temperature exceeds a preset threshold.
The working principle of the DS1832S/T&R is as follows: The power up/down sequencing of the chip is achieved using both supply voltage and voltage sense reference (VREF) threshold. Once the supply voltage and VREF exceeds its preset threshold values, the chip will assert its RESB pin for a specific amount of time. At this time, the microprocessor is then held in reset by the chip until the predefined reset timeout is met or the VCC recovers.
The chip also provides two other power management features to help optimize battery utilization. Firstly, it can be used to monitor the voltage on the supply rails with a minimum up/down time period set by the user via a logic pin that provides a configurable reset response to supply voltage changes. Secondly, it can be used to monitor the system temperature to ensure that the junction temperature does not exceed a specific threshold.
