DS2890-000+ Application Field and Working Principle
Data Acquisition - Digital PotentiometersThe DS2890-000+ is a digital potentiometer that combines features of a non-volatile, programmable, 14-bit rheostat and a 16-bit Digital to Analog Converter (DAC). It is ideal for applications such as digitally controlled attenuation, balancing and regulation, current control, and voltage scaling.The DS2890-000+ is a full CMOS device that is available in an 8-pin SOIC package and has a zero ohm resistance and a fixed wiper resistance. The wiper resistance can be externally set from 1k ohm to 1M ohm and is programmable to any value within this range. Other features include a low on resistance, a wide range of operating temperatures from -40C to +85C, and low current consumption.Since this device is non-volatile, it can be programmed with a control voltage or a serial control protocol for storing the start count, data increment, and the number of cycles. These functions make the device ideal for analog control applications. Furthermore, all logic input and output signals are 5V tolerant and the device is EPROM programmable, so that multiple applications can be stored on one device.The working principle of the DS2890-000+ is based on a linear sliding equalizer, which provides a smooth transition of the resistance value over the entire range of the device. There are two control inputs that are used to select the desired sliding path of the equalizer. The first control input is used to select the starting value and the second control input is used to select the incremental (or decremental) change in resistance with each step.The device also contains a DAC that is used to convert digital values into analog signals. The digital values are input into the device via the logic pins.
