Working Principle

The DS850DC-3-003 uses non-isolated synchronous buck converter technology, consisting of an internally generated ramp up signal and an integrated cycle-by-cycle current limit capability for high-efficiency step-down operations. It has an external Soft Start circuit to limit inrush current when starting up. Its main features are high efficiency, low noise, and high power density. It also offers a wide input voltage range of 4.5V to 28V and an adjustable output voltage range of 0.8V to 3V.

The integrated Primary MOSFET has low on-resistance to avoid drops in efficiency. When operating in PWM mode, the MOSFET is controlled by a ramp or pulse width generator and a peak current limit circuit. In pulse-skip mode, the buck converter operates at its maximum efficiency by switching the device off during light loads. At light loads, diode emulation mode starts with the MOSFET which acts like a diode, and improves efficiency at light loads. At very light loads, the converter enters into pulse-skip mode which reduces power dissipation and improves system efficiency.

Safety features of the DS850DC-3-003 include short circuit protection and thermal shutdown. An external capacitor is used to minimize the output voltage ripple and supply filtering. Other features include over-voltage protection, soft-start, and soft-stop. The device also has an integrated compensator function for optimizing output regulation in step-down applications.
