Interface - Serializers, Deserializers - have become an essential tool for engineers. One such serializer/deserializer product is the DS90UR124QVSX/NOPB (U-123), an integrated high speed serializer/deserializer with advanced features.

The U-123 is a compact and cost-effective serializer/deserializer strip with a minimum parts count, providing jitter attenuation and output data retiming in one package. It is designed to bridge the gap between multiple electrical standards, including single-ended interfaces such as Low Voltage Differential Signaling (LVDS) or CML and differential interfaces like fibres (Fibre Channel) and twisted pair (100BASE-T or 1000BASE-T). This device handles up to 12 LVDS data lanes, which makes it suitable for High Definition (HD) video, video line arrays, and similar applications.

The device can also be programmed for a wide range of signal polarities and signal rates. The integrated 100Ω termination resistors have an adjustable range from 50 to 200Ω. This allows the U-123 to interface with both AC and DC coupling.

The U-123 has two separate serializing and deserializing channels. The serializing channel accepts up to 12-bits parallel LVDS or CML data and clocks at 40-165MHz. It serializes the data and recovers the clock to re-time the data stream. The deserializing channel accepts the serial data stream and recovers the clock for data retiming. Both channels have a wide range of operating temperature from -40 to +105°C.

The outputs from the deserializing channel are LVDS compatible and are provided in an array of 8 output pairs. The outputs from the serializing channel have a low voltage swing differential pull-up option, giving it an output swing of 1Vp-p. The differential open-drain outputs can be configured for an output swing of 1.75Vp-p.

The device features a flexible output control system that allows the output data to be programmable in-phase or out-of-phase with respect to the input clock. This allows the U-123 to meet the needs of various applications.

In addition to its main functions, the U-123 also has two additional features. The first is a dedicated programmable test-pattern generator (TPG) that provides data patterns for measuring, testing and diagnosing the operation of the system. The second feature is an error detection logic (EDL) that monitors both the serial and parallel data streams and alerts the user when any errors occur.

The U-123 is also highly power efficient. The device is designed to operate with a supply voltage range from 1.4V to 3.3V. This reduces power consumption and extends the life of the device.
