DZ23C11-7-F circuits are used in many applications such as voltage regulation, voltage protection, precision voltage reference and voltage stabilization. These circuits are an array of Zener diodes connected in series with a resistor, allowing them to be used to provide a regulated voltage output.
The structure consists of a string of Zener diodes usually with their anodes connected in series, their cathodes connected to the resistor and their common point connected to the output. While the Zener diodes are of the same type and have the same Zener voltage, some slight variation in the Zener voltage is expected due to manufacturing imperfections.
Under normal conditions, each of the Zener diodes will be in reverse breakdown and the current through each diode will be limited by the total voltage drop across the diode string divided by the resistance of the resistor. This will ensure the Zener diodes are operated at their rated voltage and that the current flowing through each diode is kept to a minimum.
In the event of an overvoltage condition, the diodes are forced into forward bias. This will cause the voltage drop across the diode string to increase, resulting in higher currents and, ultimately, the diodes will be damaged. Due to the uniformity of the Zener diodes in the array, the same damage will be sustained across all the diodes. The Zener diode array provides a much greater voltage stability than that of a single Zener diode, since all the diodes will be in forward-based mode and all the currents are equal.
To maintain the uniformity and prevent damage, the circuitry should be designed so that the maximum current that can flow through the string is below the maximum rated current for each diode. This is usually done by designing the impedance of the resistor such that the maximum current will be within the rated boundaries.
