Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors

An aluminum electrolytic capacitor (Al-cap) is a polarized, modern capacitor with a solid electrolyte that has an anode made entirely of aluminum. These capacitors are the most common type of electrolytic capacitor in use today and provide a high capacitance to volume ratio. Working Principle

The basic mechanism of an aluminum electrolytic capacitor is the same as that of a traditional capacitor – the anode and cathode plates are separated by a dielectric layer. The dielectric material in the ECA-1HM330B is an aluminum oxide film which acts as the primary insulator between the plates. This film helps to maintain the required insulation resistance between the plates even at high ripple currents.When a DC voltage is applied across the electrodes of the capacitor, the oxide film gets polarized leading to the displacement of ions which form a storage space (electron-hole pairs) between the two plates. This results in a capacitance increase by reducing the equivalent oxide film thickness.The electrolytic capacitor also has a feature called the “self-healing” effect. This happens when the capacitor is subjected to higher currents than it can handle. The higher current causes the aluminum oxide film to break down and form bubbles on the surface of the capacitor which pushes the electrolyte away from the cathode. This releases the trapped charge and reduces the capacitance slowly.The ECA-1HM330B is an advanced aluminum electrolytic capacitor that is designed for reliable and long-term performance.
