Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors
Aluminum electrolytic capacitors, also known as aluminum electrolytic condensers, are polarized capacitors employing an electrolyte-filled aluminum foil forming one plate of the capacitor. The electrolyte conducts positively charged ions which are attracted to the negative foil of the capacitor. The basic structure of aluminum electrolytic capacitors typically comprises three parts: anode aluminum foil with an etched surface, a paper separator, and a bolted or riveted cathode foil or structural element. The two metal foils form the plates of the capacitor, and the electrolyte is the dielectric. As the electrolyte is continuously electrolyzed, it forms a thin dielectric layer on the anode foil. This layer is the main part of the capacitor, regulating the behavior of the capacitor.

When a voltage is applied to an aluminum electrolytic capacitor, it forms a non-polarized paralleled capacitor structure from two electrodes, which requires no insulation material. When a positive voltage is applied, the negative ions around the electrode enter into the capacitor, making the dielectric layer of polarized. The process of ions entering is called “Charging”, and then the capacitor has the highest capacitance. When the positive voltage is removed, the cations around the electrodes are attracted to the positive electrode and exit from the capacitor, eliminating the polarization. This process is called “Discharging”, which causes the capacitance to decrease.
