Aluminum electrolytic capacitors, also known as electrolytic capacitors, are polarized, thermally stable components which consist of two electroconductive electrodes separated by an adhesive or solid electrolyte.
The EEE-1ES4R7SR aluminum electrolytic capacitor belongs to a class of radial-leaded surface mount capacitors. The series is characterized by their high-ripple current capability up to 3.0 amps, long life ratings up to 5,000 hours at 125°C, 4.7μF to 47μF capacitance range, and surge voltage up to 16V peak. The input voltage ratings are 6V, 10V, 16V, 25V, 35V and 63V.
Aluminum electrolytic capacitors are one of the most utilized and commercially available types of capacitors used for electromagnetic interference (EMI) and radio frequency (RF) noise suppression. The most common application areas include filters, power supplies, line-by-line voltage compensation, snubbers, signal processing, voltage transient protection, portable electronic device shielding and automotive and industrial applications.
The capacitance of an aluminum electrolytic capacitor is directly proportional to its surface area. The cathode is an anode-oxidized aluminum foil and acts as the capacitor electrode. The electrolyte material is generally an organic infertile hydrofluoric acid that serves as an ionic conductor. In the capacitors, the electrolyte is sandwiched between two aluminum layers called mesh or flat foil. The electrodes are usually formed by depositing a conductive material onto the anode and cathode foils. The anode and cathode foils are separated by the polymer separator material, which allows for a better distribution of the charges across the electrolyte.
The dielectric in an aluminum electrolytic capacitor is a layer of aluminum oxide and acts as a barrier to ions flowing between the two conductive electrodes. A thin layer of oil is placed in between the capacitors to act as a dielectric medium as well as an insulator. The dielectric strength of an aluminum electrolytic capacitor is determined by the voltage applied to the capacitor.
The working principle of aluminum electrolytic capacitors is quite simple. They are essentially two metal plates separated by an electrolyte. When a voltage is applied, the positively-charged ions in the electrolyte flow towards the negative electrode, and the negatively-charged ions flow towards the positive electrode. The electrons in the metal plates flow in opposite directions, forming a charge. This charge is stored in the capacitor and can be released when the voltage is removed, allowing the charge to dissipate back into the electrolyte.
In conclusion, aluminum electrolytic capacitors are widely used in a variety of applications due to their high capacitance, low cost, and long life. They have excellent performance in terms of load life, very low ESR, and vibration resistance. In addition, the EEE-1ES4R7SR aluminum electrolytic capacitor provides a range of voltage ratings to fit any application while also providing excellent temperature ratings.
