The most common type of electrolytic capacitor consists of an anode of aluminum foil, covered with an insulating oxide layer, and a cathode of reversible hydrogen or other electrolyte, separated by a thin lining of paper or other separator. The anode is flooded with electrons from the external circuit, and the hydrogen ions in the electrolyte migrate freely to the surface of the aluminum foil and form a possible layer of metal-oxide-hydrogen material.
