The positive plate is a silvered foil covered with a metal oxide layer and the negative plate is an aluminum foil, the two are separated by an insulation wax paper sheet and connected to the device by leads. In practice, an AC safety current is used to create an electric field between the aluminum foil and the silvered foil which then "charges" the aluminum electrolyte. The amount of charge in this system is determined by the surface area of the aluminum foil in contact with the electrolyte and the hydrostatic pressure.
