Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors

Among the thousands of types of capacitors commonly used today, aluminum electrolytic capacitors form a large proportion. This type has significant advantages such as low equivalent series resistance (ESR), large capacity, low price and long life. The EEE-FK2A220P is a typical aluminum electrolytic capacitor.

EEE-FK2A220P Application Field and Working Principle

EEE-FK2A220P capacitors are small, tubular-shaped capacitors suitable for a wide range of applications. Some typical applications are smoothing, filtering and decoupling for DC voltage regulation, DC/DC converters and power supplies, switching power supply, TV/AV equipment and personal computers. The capacitor is made from a combination of anodic oxide layer of dielectric formed on an aluminum oxide film, which acts as the electrolyte. Inside the unit, the capacitor is wound with two sets of electrolytic foil with separator in between for providing electrical isolation.

The working principle of an aluminum electrolytic capacitor can be explained by the following four steps:

1. The anode is made up of an aluminum foil that is finished with a layer of anodic oxide. The same anodic oxide layer is also formed on the dielectric.

2. The cathode is made up of a foil of another material with a coating of electrolyte, e.g. cathode foil of copper with a coating of copper sulfate or copper bicarbonate.

3. Electric current is applied to the anode and cathode foils, causing electrons to flow between them, thus creating an electric field/potential difference between them.

4. The electric field, when properly applied to the anode and cathode, creates an electrochemical reaction at the anode\'s oxide layer. This electrochemical reaction causes ionic migration that transfers electrons from the anode to the cathode and results in the formation of a dielectric barrier, the capacitance.

As a result, the EEE-FK2A220P is an aluminum electrolytic capacitor that is capable of providing high capacitance in small size and has long-term reliability. It is suitable for a variety of electronic applications due to its wide capacity range and good performance.
