They consist of two aluminium foils separated by a layer of paper or plastic. The two aluminium foils are anode and cathode and the paper or plastic is the dielectric layer. The anode foil is usually made of aluminium and is coated with a thin layer of oxide that acts as an insulator. The cathode foil is usually made of copper. A solution of electrolyte is then added to the stack and it is sealed in a metal or plastic casing.
