Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors

Aluminum electrolytic capacitors are widely used in a number of applications because of their useful properties. This type of capacitors (called electrolytic because they are composed of two electrodes separated by an electrolyte, often composed of aqueous acid) offers a larger capacity of energy storage than usual capacitors with small size and low weight.

The procedure to obtain an aluminum electrolytic capacitor consists of stacking a thin aluminium foil that serves as a cathode, which may be coated with an oxide layer for improving the current dissipation, a separator, which is generally nylon 6,6, and a sheet of an absorbent material soaked in an ionic conducting solution. The anode wire is connected to the aluminum foil. This assembly is then rolled into a tube, sealed by a cover of epoxy resin, featuring an external terminal connected to the foil and internally to the anode wire.
