The separator is made of insulating paper. This paper is soaked with electrolyte and functions as insulation and a barrier to prevent short-circuit between electrodes.


When being electrified, aluminum composition combines with oxygen ions, hydroxyl and impurities to form a porous anode film. The inner layer of the film is the contact area between electrolyte and aluminum sheet. The outer layer is mainly composed of aluminum oxide, which is a capacitor dielectric. The contact area of electrolyte and aluminum sheet itself is very small, its dielectric is very large, and the capacitance of electrolyte also increases.


The electrical field generated on the surface of anodic film will cause positive ions in electrolyte to migrate to the anode. At the same time, negative ions migrate to the cathode side.
