Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors
The EEU-FC1C822 is a aluminum electrolytic capacitor, a type of capacitor that is widely used in a variety of applications from electronics to power semiconductor devices. It is a polarized capacitor with an extremely high capacitance per unit volume, compared to other capacitor types. This makes it an attractive choice for applications where space is at a premium.
The EEU-FC1C822 consists of two aluminum foils, separated by an electrolyte dielectric material. It is also known as a ‘wet electrolytic capacitor’ because of its need for a liquid electrolyte to take up space and provide electrical insulation. The two aluminum foils are separated by a layer of paper or film that helps to make the capacitor self-healing. Self-healing capacitors will re-form when the damaged area has been removed.
Applications
Aluminum electrolytic capacitors often find use in applications that need to absorb large amounts of energy quickly, particularly where space is constrained. This includes audio frequency applications, power supplies, power converters, and high-voltage applications. EEU-FC1C822 capacitors are used to store energy in cells and batteries in power semiconductor devices such as mobile phones, watches, and other portable electronics.
Additionally, they are used to provide the peak current required to start the motor in surge protecting circuits and devices. The ultra-high capacitance of these capacitors ensures their suitability in high frequency applications and motor drives, where they help to reduce the size of the main capacitors in the circuit and generate heat.
Working Principle
The EEU-FC1C822 capacitor uses the principle of conductive electrolysis to store electrical energy between two plates. When the applied voltage exceeds the rated voltage and the rated temperature, the capacitor begins to store electrical energy. The electricity is stored as a result of the electrolyte within the capacitor being ionized. The ionized particles are attracted to the positively charged plates, creating an electric field within the capacitor.
The electric field is measured in farads and indicates the capacitance of the capacitor. The electric current flows through the capacitor by converting the chemical energy stored in the electrolyte to electrical energy. The aluminum foil serves as the plates of the capacitor, and the paper helps to provide insulation and prevent short-circuiting.
As the capacitor is charged, the current decreases and the voltage increases until it reaches a maximum. Once the voltage reaches the maximum, the capacitor is discharged, allowing the current to flow in the opposite direction until the capacitor is entirely discharged. This completes one cycle of charge and discharge. The total amount of electrical energy stored in the capacitor is directly related to the capacitance, which in turn is determined by the aluminum foil area, distance between them, and the dielectric material.
Aluminum electrolytic capacitors, like the EEU-FC1C822, have high capacitance and can store more electricity in a smaller volume than other types of capacitors. This makes them suitable for applications where space is at a premium, such as power supplies, audio frequency applications, high-voltage applications, and power semiconductor devices.
