Aluminum electrolytic capacitors are widely used today in numerous applications. EEV-FK1H221P finds use in a range of condensed applications such as power supplies, LED lighting, LED displays, and audio amplifiers. This series of aluminum electrolytic capacitors is designed and manufactured by non-traditional methods to deliver high capacitance values and ultra-low leakage current. As this series also features volumetric efficiency, they are also capable of operating at a higher voltage.

An aluminum electrolytic capacitor begins with a solid but tortuous pellet-shaped anode (positive electrode) made of porous aluminum. The material is treated and etched so that its surface area is maximized. After cleaning, a layer of aluminum oxide film is formed by directional oxidation. The electrolyte, in the form of a solution of oxide material, fills the pores of the anode. This solution typically contains alkyl aluminum bromide and other metallic oxide materials.

The second electrode is the cathode (negative) of the aluminum electrolytic capacitor and is typically made of alumninum foil with a layer of carbon on top. This anode-cathode assembly is then rolled up and inserted into the capacitor’s enclosure. The cathode is then connected to the negative terminal of the capacitor. The remaining enclosure is filled with an electrolyte solution made up of hybrid Organic-Inorganic salts, such as ethylene glycol and ammonium borate.

The active components of the EEV-FK1H221P are formed by both the anode and the electrolyte solution. These components create an electrical field around the anode and, when a voltage is applied, the anode acts as a conductor of electrical charges. This electric field creates an electric double layer. In the presence of the electric double layer, cations are attracted to the anode and anions attracted to the cathode, forming a capacitance.

When a voltage is applied to the aluminum electrolytic capacitor, the electric field permeates the anode, with the molecules of the electrolyte penetrating and forming a charge in each of its pores. This process is known as the Faraday-Alshuler Effect. Following the Faraday-Alshuler Effect, a thin blanket of anionic material forms around the surface of the anode. This layer of anionic material prevents the formation of short circuits, which allows the capacitor to store a fixed amount of electrical charge.
