EL211 Application Field and Working Principle

Optoisolators, or optical isolators, are photonic components which provide optical isolation between input and output ports of devices. Generally, a direct current, or DC, signal is directed from an input port to an output port. The EL211, a type of optoisolator, works by converting an input electronic signal into an output optical signal. The optical signal is then converted back into an electronic signal at the output port.The EL211 is a three-lead optoisolator and it consists of an infrared LED with two silicon photodiodes. Input and output circuits of the optoisolator are completely isolated from each other through the LED and photodiodes. When a voltage is applied to the input leads, the LED emits an infra-red light which is detected by the silicon photodiodes, which convert it back into an electric signal. This signal is then applied to the output side. The EL211 is used in industrial control systems for isolating DC signals from one part of the circuit to the other. It can also be used in power electronic devices, such as inverters, rectifiers and converters.
