Its standard output voltage and current levels are sufficient to directly drive a triac or SCR with a voltage rating of 120 Vac/DC, or 250 Vac/DC. It also has two isolated footprints that offer a variety of options for controlling low levels of current.

The EL3012S(TA)-V features an integrated opto-coupler that isolates the AC control signal from the AC output signal significantly reducing the risk of noise and signal interference. Inputs can be driven direct from a control IC or can be opto-coupled to the open collector of a uC or small IC. It can switch up to 20 amps and is capable of handling high inrush currents. The device is also protected against overvoltage peaks.

The operating principle of the EL3012S(TA)-V is relatively simple. When the input is energized, the integrated opto-coupler turns on and applies a voltage across the SCR gate triggering the Triac. Once the Triac is triggered, its output is triggered in both positive and negative half cycles, thus providing output current to the load. The load is powered until the input is deactivated or the current limit is reached. When the current limit is reached, the Triac turns off. The SCR will also turn off if the input is deactivated while the current is still flowing, and the Triac will also turn off.

The EL3012S(TA)-V has a wide range of applications including lamp control, door control, motor speed regulation, motor starting, lighting control, and heater control.
