ENC28J60-I/SS is a Ethernet controller used for communication between two or more local Ethernet networks. It is used to connect publicly connected LANs or widely distributed Ethernet nodes, for example in a home or small office. The ENC28J60-I/SS controller interfaces to the host microcontroller through a Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI). It is suitable for use in those low-cost, low-power embedded systems that require a highly integrated solution.

The ENC28J60-I/SS controller incorporates on-chip ENC28J60 Ethernet physical layer MAC, DC/DC converter, and digital oscillator. The micro controller then processes the data and sends back the response. The controller will receive the acknowledgement message, checksum it, and convert it to suitable Ethernet frame format before transmitting it. This way the two process can communicate in a secure network.
