EPCS128SI16N or the Enhanced Performance Configuration Serial Flash (EPCS) memory family of devices is an optimal memory solution for Field-Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs). It offers a wide variety of applications including low-cost, high-speed configuration of FPGAs, as well as several other non-volatile memory applications. The memory operates in up to 3.9V with a typical read current of 57mA, and has a robust package with electrostatic discharge protection of up to 8kV. The device is made up of 128 ROM (read-only memory) bits, organized as 16 words by 8 bits, and is ideal for use with FPGAs or other digital devices.
The EPCS128SI16N is a typical non-volatile logic nonvolatile memory (NVM) used to store configuration data for FPGAs. It functions by transferring configuration data from the FPGA to the memory on each power cycle. The device's main purpose is to store the FPGA's configuration data and allow the FPGA to be reconfigured on power-up. During the configuration process, data from the memory is loaded into the FPGA's SRAM memory, where it is used to configure the FPGA before it is ready to use. The EPCS128SI16N is manufactured using the latest 6T process node technology, providing an extremely cost-effective solution. The device integrates an asynchronous SRAM with 8Kb of configuration code, along with a 16Kb ROM-only memory. The ROM memory is commonly used to store the FPGA's configuration data, while the SRAM component is used to store user data. The device also offers additional non-volatile memory storage capacity with two additional 16Kb EEPROM blocks.

On wake-up, the FPGA begins to query the memory and identify the data that it requires. Once the FPGA has identified the relevant data, it transfers the configuration data to the on-board SRAM. Once all the relevant data has been transferred, the logic will be ready for normal operation.
