The EPCS16SI8N is a memory type configuration PROMs (Programmable Read-Only Memory) specifically used to program Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs). It is a non-volatile memory meaning its memory contents will not be erased when supplied with power. A Programmable Read-Only Memory, PROM, is a type of digital memory chip used to store permanent data which is used to program FPGAs. The device is made by Altera and it has a total capacity of 128Kb and capable of supporting several generations of Altera FPGAs including MAX V, Cyclone IV, Cyclone V and Arria 10 GX FPGA families.
EPCS16SI8N configuration PROMs are sometimes referred to as flash memory as they work similarly, storing data bits in an array of cells consisting of floating-gate transistors. A single cell stores one bit of information and when certain voltages, varying from 0V (low) to 3.3V (high) is applied to read a value, it is referred to as programming the chip. Electronically Programmable Read-Only Memory, EPROM, can be erased by exposure to ultraviolet light allowing the chip to be reprogrammed, unlike the EPCS16SI8N devices.
Working of configuration PROMs begins with downloading the configuration data and programming the memory. The PROM is fitted into the target FPGA package and the desired FPGA is then connected. Power is supplied to the FPGA chip as well as the PROM. On power-up, the PROM initializes the FPGA through the configuration process.
The EPCS16SI8N can be programmed using the Quartus Prime software through a third-party programmer. It is programmed using SPI which is a four-wire serial bus that uses clock and data signals for communication. The Quartus Prime software then downloads the memory blanking data and programming data over the four-wire SPI bus. Upon completion of the programming, the FPGA will initialize and will be ready to use. A fully programmed FPGA can be reconfigured in many ways.
