TVS – Diodes, or Transient Voltage Suppressor Diodes, are used to protect electronics from high electromagnetic or electrostatic fields. These transient signals can damage or destroy components in the electronics. The ESDLC3V3D3B-TP is a three channel protection circuit and is designed to protect signals such as data, IO, TO and TVT lines from transients, and is suitable for dealing with surges up to 15KV.
The ESDLC3V3D3B-TP is composed of integrated circuits, resistors, capacitors, and inductors. It is especially useful in fields such as Automotive, Industrial, Aviation, and Communications. Automotive applications include engine control modules, windshield wipers, door locks, interior lights, and other electrical or electronic systems. The ESDLC3V3D3B-TP’s transient protection circuit is also found in industrial applications such as production power lines and conveyors, as well as robots. The ESDLC3V3D3B-TP works through the use of voltage clamping. Basically, when the diode is presented with a voltage higher than the breakdown voltage, it engages the voltage clamping mechanism. It clamps the voltage down so that it does not exceed the breakdown voltage. This prevents the surge of electricity from getting through to the device it protects.
The voltage clamping of the ESDLC3V3D3B-TP works best in applications that have a positive bus or power rail, and a negative reference ground. This circuit has two stages; a protection circuit and a discharge path. When a transient voltage exceeds the breakdown voltage, the device’s transient protection circuit immediately engages, lowering the voltage to the device’s limits. It then gives the disintegrating surge current a safe path to ground, and allows the voltage on the bus or power rail to reset itself.
The specific breakdown voltage of the ESDLC3V3D3B-TP is 3.3V. It can deal with transients up to a maximum of 15kV. The circuit provides a current limit of 8A and a peak pulse current of up to 1kA. It also provides ESD protection to IEC 61000-4-2 standards and is able to withstand up to 8kV contact discharge. Additionally, it has an operating temperature of -40°C to 85°C so it can be used in a wide temperature range.
