The EVAL-AD7665EDZ is an evaluation board designed to provide an insight into the field of application and workings of Analog to Digital Converters (ADCs). This evaluation board consists of two integrated circuits, an 8-bit, 25MHz, high speed ADC (AD7665) and a controlling logic chip (LPC1766).
The AD7665 component is biased for a single analog input range of ±10 (+/- 10) with a span of 20V per 8bits. The performance within this range is not affected by the power supply, with the input range tolerance specified as ±30mV. The device operates from an internal linear voltage regulator with a range of 3 to 5.5V. A low off-state at no loading is pumped out via a separate regulator powered by the 3V battery.
The LPC1766 architecture is a powerful 32-bit ARM Cortex-M3 processor, integrated on the AD7665EDZ. The processor operates at frequencies up to 50MHZ and provides enough power to run the application with most of the developments done by the user. The device includes the associated RAM, ROM and digital peripherals like UART, Timer, SPI and I2C.
The onboard Analog to Digital conversion takes place when a voltage is applied to one of the three input sources. At any given time, only one input channel can be used. The voltage input through the channel is then amplified and converted into an 8-bit equivalent, which is then stored in the AD7665. The 8-bit two\'s complement representation is then transmitted to the LPC1766 via SPI.
The LPC1766 then provides the necessary interface to the user application layer. This layer is responsible for transforming the 8-bit representation into a 10-bit digital representation that is suitable for further analysis and comparison. This is done via an internal shifting algorithm and the results are displayed via a graphical user interface on the host system.
The EVAL-AD7665EDZ also includes a green LED indicator, to signify the success of the conversion. In addition, the evaluation board is provided with an external SD card interface, for further storage of transfer of the data. The integrated mikroBUS™ Header and the Reset Button also provides further convenience.
In summary, the EVAL-AD7665EDZ is a powerful yet simple solution for those setting out to evaluate Analog to Digital Converters. Due to the high speed and high precision, the AD7665 is suitable for most scientific applications. The evaluation board allows a user to evaluate various aspects of the ADC and adjust the parameters where necessary. This ensures that the user gets the best performance, from the ADC.
