FAN2503S27X Application Field and Working Principle
FAN2503S27X refers to a Linear Voltage Regulators belonging to PMIC or power management integrated circuit family. The FAN2503S27X voltage regulators, introduced by Fairchild Semiconductor, are 3-terminal adjustable regulators that provide a higher efficiency and greater output current than linear regulator. Working Principle - Overview
In FAN2503S27X, the output voltage is set up by populating external resistors in between the output voltage, positive voltage, and the ground pins. Thereafter, the internal circuitry serves as a voltage regulator, maintaining the output voltage constant against ripple, load change and line transient.
The popular linear voltage regulator used in FAN2503S27X is LM317. The LM317 in the FAN2503S27X is a three-terminal positive voltage regulator that is designed to regulate positive voltage up to 40 Volts at a peak output current of 1.5 Amps. The block diagram of the FAN2503S27X with the LM317 is shown below.

In the figure above, R1, R2 and R3 are the external resistors that are combined to establish the voltage output of the LM317. The Reference Input is used to set the value of the output voltage. The Feedback Input is used to monitor the output voltage and adjust it to the desired level.
The voltage regulator consists of two Power Transistor and an error-amplifier. The error-amplifier is used to compare the Reference Voltage and the Output Voltage. When this difference is greater than the desired level, the Power Transistor is used to modify the output voltage.
Whenever the current passes through the Output Pin, it is measured by an Internal Current Sense Circuit. This circuit then measures the current passing through the Output Pin and feeds it to the error-amplifier.
The Voltage Regulation Loop is setup, by connecting the error-amplifier output to the power transistors\' base terminal. The power transistors in the Loop forms a voltage-divider network and the output voltage is adjusted accordingly.
The feedback to the Voltage Regulation Loop is given through the Voltage-sense terminal. The voltage-sense terminal measures the output voltage and adjusts the loop accordingly. By this, the output voltage is adjusted continuously, to attain the desired value.
The output voltage can be further adjusted by altering the Reference Voltage or changing the values of R1, R2, and R3. The Reference Voltage can be adjusted by providing an external voltage through the Reference Input Terminal. And the values of R1, R2, and R3 can be changed to get the desired output voltage.
