The FAN7711M family of controllers offer a comprehensive suite of features for lighting and ballast applications. The family consists of two devices, FAN7711M and FAN7711ML, which generally differ in their output current capacity and the number of LED channels. This application note provides an understanding of the FAN7711M\'s capabilities and operating principles.

FAN7711M is a DC/DC switching converter with integrated MOSFETs, wide input voltage range, programmable output current and dead time control optimized for lighting and ballast applications. Containing just one external control loop at the output, FAN7711M offers an economic solution for both current-controled and wide voltage range lighting and ballast driver applications. It has integrated high-side and low-side power MOSFETs, allowing it to directly drive the load without any additional external control components such as transistors or diodes.

The device incorporates several integrated protection features that make it reliable and provide improved power system safety. The device is ESD protected, and the integrated protection switch provide output short circuit protection and dead time control which prevent overvoltage on supplies and thus protect the system. The integrated dynamic voltage positioning further ensures the output voltage accuracy, resulting in improved system efficiency.

FAN7711M offers wide input operating voltage range (3V - 24V) to accommodate automotive and industrial control systems. With the help of dedicated internal feedback and feedback sampling circuitry, the controller achieves high accuracy outputs, allowing for a wide variety of current controlled applications. The internal voltage positioning circuit provides proportionate response to input voltage variations and obtains constant output voltage over a wide load range.

The FAN7711M can work in either current-controlled or voltage-controlled mode. In current-controlled mode, the FAN7711M regulates a current source to the LED string using PWM feedback and a high side power MOSFET. The LED string current is set through the external resistor. In voltage-controlled mode, the FAN7711M regulates a voltage source to the LED string via PWM feedback and a low side power MOSFET. The LED string voltage is set through the external resistor.

The PWM feedback and dead time control circuitry of the FAN7711M allows the device to switch in the low side while switching out the high side, providing synchronous rectification and ensuring low supply current. The dead time control circuit can be programmed to limit the on time of either the high side or the low side switch, depending on the desired output current waveform.
