The FLZ20VC is a Single Zener Diode that finds wide application in environmental monitoring and industrial electronic control. The working principle of a Zener diode is based on the characteristics of silicon. When the reverse bias crosses a certain limit, a strong electric field exists in the junction. When the electric field reaches or exceeds the downstream of the diode breakdown, the diode begins to conduct. This behavior is called Zener breakdown.

The FLZ20VC Single Zener Diode is designed based upon the characteristics of the junction and the respective material value of the diode. Its two leads provide a path for current to flow through the diode, and the voltage allowed varies considerably depending on the Zener voltage of the diode. The voltage is set by the doping process during fabrication and it will remain constant as long as the current is lower than the maximum allowable current.

As stated before, Zener principle is based on the reverse-bias temperature coefficient. The characteristic of the FLZ20VC is the low temperature coefficient of the reverse-bias current-voltage curve. This allows the diode to maintain a constant voltage despite changes in temperature. This feature is very useful in regulating the output voltage of power supplies.

The FLZ20VC Single Zener Diode can be used in both single and dual configurations. When used in a single configuration, the Zener diode works as a voltage regulator. This happens when the Zener voltage is greater than the applied voltage and the current through the diode is limited to a value below the breakdown voltage. When used in a dual configuration, the diode works as a voltage clamp.
