Optoisolators - Logic Output
A logic output optoisolator, such as the FOD063L, is an integrated circuit which uses light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and photodetectors to provide an electrical isolation barrier between two circuits that allows for communication while maintaining the isolation. The LED inside the optoisolator provides the necessary electrical isolation which supports the signals between the two systems.Working Principle
The FOD063L optoisolator works by using the LED inside the device to control the movement of electrons across a gap of air or other material (known as a “dielectric”) between two metallic electrodes. This action causes an electrical potential to develop across the two electrodes. When the LED is on, this potential is the same as the input signal, but when it’s off, the potential drops to near zero, so that no current flows between the electrodes. This principle is used in a number of ways, depending on the number of electrodes present in the optoisolator. In the case of the FOD063L, the electrons are diverted to two paths between the electrodes; one path (known as the “phase path”) is used to turn the signal on, and the other path (“reference path”) is used to turn the signal off. This means that the LED’s on and off states are controlled by the input logic signal, allowing the device to operate as an optoisolator.Advantages of Optoisolators
