Optoisolators are electronic devices that utilize light in order to separate an input signal from an output signal in order to isolate and protect sensitive circuits or pieces of equipments. The FOD073L is a type of optoisolator that possess a built-in photo transistor with a common emitter, photovoltaic output. It is a miniature packages in a 4-pin plastic case with wide power supply voltage range of 2.0V to 32.0V.

The FOD073L has a wide range of application due to its various specifications. On top of that, is it small size and light weight features. This makes it very compatible for applications in automobile parts, motion control, energy measurement, logic circuits, automation, and portable devices. It is mainly used to electrically separate and provide isolation between circuits, transient protection for audio/data interfaces, and signal level control. The FOD073L is also able to detect and respond to a wide range of input signals due to its wide operating temperature range of -40°C up to 105°C. It also has a wide optical coupling range from 0.5mW/cm² to 56mW/cm². This gives it the capability to detect and respond to a wide range of input signals. Last but not least, its noise immunity of 200V/mS reduces the possibility of malfunctioning and improves the reliability of the device.

The FOD073L working principle is based on the circuit configuration of a common emitter phototransistor output optoisolator. It is structured by a short circuit between photodiode emitter and a collector of the photo transistor. This structure makes it able to detect a large range of input signals from various sources. This also allows it to be able to provide a high voltage isolation.

When the optical input is applied, the light is detected by photodiode and electrons are emitted which activates the phototransistor. This creates an ON state which causes current to flow from the collector to the emitter of the photo transistor. This ON state also generates a voltage signal at the phototransistor to indicate the input signal. On the other hand, when the optical input is not applied, the phototransistor is OFF and no current flows, thus no voltage signal is generated.

In conclusion, the FOD073L optoisolator is a perfect fit for many applications due to its various specifications. It is also able to detect a wide range of input signals from different sources, allowing it to provide a high voltage isolation.
