Opto-isolators, also known as opto-couplers, are devices that use light to transfer electronic signals and energy from one circuit to another, while completely isolating the two circuits from each other, both electrically and physically. The FOD0721 is part of the family of infrared opto-isolator products manufactured by Fairchild Semiconductor – an American technology company which develops semiconductor products and solutions. The FOD0721 provides a current-transfer ratio (CTR) of 10% and is specifically designed for logic output applications.
The logic section of the FOD0721 is composed of an infrared light emitting diode (LED) and a phototransistor. The emitting diode can handle up to 10mA of direct current (DC) and it is capable of transmitting light over an infrared spectrum of 880nm. The phototransistor is a NPN device with an integral Darlington configuration, allowing it to detect low amounts of light and operate with a wide range of collector-base and emitter-base voltages. When the LED is forward biased, current flows through and light is emitted.
In the logic application of the FOD0721, the LED will be continuously forward biased by an external driver source. This allows a constant current to travel through the LED and emit light towards the phototransistor. In turn, the current-transfer ratio of the FOD0721 will effectively convert the light energy into current and activate the phototransistor. Finally, the output from digital logic circuits can be buffered and transistor can be used for amplifying the digital signal which will cause higher switching speeds and better output performance.
The electrical isolation between input and output, provided by opto-isolators such as the FOD0721, is useful in a variety of industrial and commercial applications. For instance, opto-isolators can be used to connect two or more systems and prevent potential ground fault, electrical surge and voltage transient issues from occurring. Moreover, opto-isolators are often used to protect sensitive components from electrical noise. In addition, utilizing opto-isolators can also provide improved noise immunity, enhanced speed and signal integrity, as well as galvanic isolation.
