Optoisolators consist of an input and an output circuit. The input, typically a light-emitting diode (LED) or photodiode, is optically isolated from the output which is typically either a transistor, a photovoltaic cell, or a thyristor. FOD2711 is a standard part number of a photovoltaic output optoisolator and is an example of how this technology can be used.
A FOD2711 optoisolator has a photoconductor as the input and a Darlington transistor as the output, isolated by a gap of 1mm between them. It can be used to interface two circuits that share a common ground but must remain electrically isolated from each other. Some applications of the FOD2711 optoisolator include connecting safety circuits to activate sensors and protective devices, translating signals between logic levels, and connecting logic-level outputs to higher-current devices.
FOD2711optoisolators are designed to function as a current source. When the LED is illuminated, the photodiode mounted under the LED will produce a a current output. The current output from the transistor can then drive the load connected to the terminals of the FOD2711.
The FOD2711 optoisolator operates at a voltage of 5V and has a forward current of 280mA. It is designed for 1 msec operation and can handle peak pulses of up to 500mA. It also has a current transfer efficiency of up to 600% with a power-off LED current of 1mA and a power-on LED current of 3mA. Additionally, the FOD2711 optoisolator has an operating temperature range of -40°C to +85°C and can be safely used in harsh environments.
