The FSDM311A AC/DC converter is an off-line, high efficiency, low power factor and low standby power integrated circuit; it is an ideal choice for applications with an ‘off-line’ charge and high efficiency demand. It is also suitable for applications such as LED lighting, LED/CCFL display backlighting, sensorless BLDC motor drives, solar inverters, and standby power supplies.
The FSDM311A integrates a low voltage high frequency power factor correction (PFC) converter and the flyback or forward converter. To maximizing system performance, the FSDM311A can provide high efficiency. Moreover, it includes a wide input voltage range, up to 90% peak efficiency, and meets Energy Star level V average efficiency requirements.
Specifically, the architecture of the FSDM311A integrates a low voltage high frequency PFC front end with a flyback or forward converter rear end. The PFC section of FSDM311A uses a three-phase, interleaved PFC converter with current sharing on secondary side, providing high system efficiency over a wide input voltage range.
The working principle of FSDM311A can be divided into two parts. Firstly, in the PFC section, when a full-wave, three-phase rectified voltage is applied to the input of the converter, the low voltage control IC, FSDM311A, keeps the input power factor (PF) above 0.92 by regulating the output of the PFC section, simultaneously adjusting all three current sources, and rectifying the active or «sinusoidal» input current. Then, the output of the PFC is fed to the output stage while a regulated auxiliary power is extracted from the PFC output.
Secondly, in the output stage, an H-bridge topology is used to control the output electrical power. Output voltage comes out of the H-bridge and is fed back to FSDM311A so that it can control the converted power. The output power is measured and the error amplifier provides an adjustable voltage to the internal control loop. The output voltage is regulated by the PWM and pulse density modulation technique.
In summary, the features and advantages of the FSDM311A include a wide input voltage range, up to 90% peak efficiency, low emissions and low standby power, high frequency materialization and small size, current mode control and active PFC, as well as a closed loop power conversion with internal voltage feedback.
