Fiber-optic sensing technology has been increasingly used in a wide range of industries and applications, and fiber-optic sensing system (FSTHS) is one of the most prominent among these technologies. FSTHS is based on the principle of light intensity modulation to detect physical processes such as temperature, pressure, strain and acceleration. FSTHS has varied applications in real life. In civil engineering, it can be used to monitor buildings and bridges in real-time, which is helpful to detect any damage or weakened states under dynamic forces. In factories, FSTHS can be used to monitor manufacturing processes for better product quality control and process optimization. In transportation, FSTHS can be used to monitor the surrounding environment, such as traffic conditions, for more efficient and safe transportation. Furthermore, FSTHS can be applied to remote surveillance systems, communication system infrastructure management and command & control operations. FSTHS is based on optical fibers, which are very sensitive to environmental parameters. They are able to detect micro-changes in temperature, pressure, strain and other physical processes. The FSTHS system works in two steps. Firstly, in the input stage, intense light from an external light source is guided along the optical fiber and used to measure physical parameters of interest. Secondly, in the output stage, the light that has traveled through the fiber is modulated in such a way that physical parameters can be extracted from the optical signal. The working principle of FSTHS is based on the interaction between light and matter. The input light is always mutually interacting with physical properties of the environment. This is known as the "optical-matter interaction" mechanism. This mechanism works in an inverse mode, whereby the intensity of the light is dependent on the physical parameter it interacts with. For example, the intensity of the light changing along the fiber will be directly related to the temperature of the environment. Moreover, the modulation of the light is dependent on the properties of the fiber. For instance, in the case of temperature sensing, the modulated light signal is dependent on the thermal diffusivity of the fiber. This means that the thermal diffusivity can be used to measure the temperature of the environment and consequently interpret the output signal. FSTHS is highly beneficial in many applications. Firstly, it offers a cost-effective means to monitor, measure and extract real-time data from the environment. This is especially useful in remote and harsh environments that are hard to access. Secondly, FSTHS is more reliable than traditional sensing methods in providing accurate measurements in response to variations in environmental parameters. Thirdly, FSTHS is much less intrusive than traditional methods and can be installed without causing any destructive vibrations or damage. In conclusion, FSTHS is a cost-effective, reliable and non-intrusive sensing technology that can be applied in many applications. This technology is highly beneficial for providing accurate measurements in response to variations in environmental parameters.
