GDT Application Field and Working Principle
GDT, or gas discharge tubes, are RF accessories that are used for a variety of purposes. The use of GDTs can be divided into two different application fields: surge protection devices and surge elimination systems. In each application field, GDTs have their own working principles which determine their use and effectiveness.
Surge Protection Devices
GDTs are often used in surge protection devices in order to protect sensitive equipment from dangerous transient voltage spikes. A transient voltage spike occurs when the current reaches too high of a level for the device to handle, causing irreparable damage to the delicate circuitry. GDTs are equipped with an internal semi-conductor that senses the transient voltage surge and discharges it through a gas bottle. This line of defense effectively reduces and easier protects circuits from a damaging voltage spike.
Surge Elimination Systems
GDTs are also used in surge elimination systems in order to reduce or completely eliminate the risk of electrical surges occurring in power distribution networks. These systems are often used in industrial applications such as data centers, factories, and buildings, where the safety of personnel and the equipment is paramount. The working principle for surge elimination systems is similar to the one used in surge protection devices, as GDTs are used to detect a voltage surge and ‘knock down’ or dissipate the energy before it reaches its intended target.
