Functioning of Zener Diode

A normal diode acts as an open switch for reverse bias i.e. the electric field is strong enough to pull electrons from the N-type material to the P-type material, creating an avalanche breakdown. Whereas, in the case of a Zener diode, it is designed keeping in mind the avalanche breakdown phenomenon. The electric field is more than the maximum electric field of a PN junction. This results in additional holes in the N-type material and electrons in the P-type material. This phenomenon is known as Zener breakdown.

In case of reverse bias, the voltage applied across the diode is lower than the breakdown voltage, the diode acts as an open switch. When the voltage across the diode is greater than the reverse breakdown voltage, the electric field generated would be enough to create an avalanche breakdown.
