Introduction

GDZ20B-E3-18, also known as Zenner diode or voltage reference diode, is a type of Diode. Working Principle

The basic GDZ20B-E3-18 works in reverse bias, as do all other Zenner diodes. It has a heavily doped N-type semiconductor region (cathode) in contact with a lightly doped P-type semiconductor region (Anode) and is able to maintain the voltage drop in the junction stable over a wide range of current. This is because, when the device is powered, the material in the PN junction will become depleted and the electrons will flow from the N-type materials to the P-type materials, creating a conductive path.When the voltage is below the reverse biased voltage, current can flow through the Zener diode and the output voltage is stable. However, due to the Zener effect, when the voltage crosses the breakdown voltage, the current breaks down and the output voltage begins to increase. This is because the depleted material absorbs staggering amounts of current and the current produces a strong electric field above the breakdown voltage.
