TVS - Diodes: GL24-HT3-GS08 Application Field and Working Principle

TVS – Diodes are specialists at protecting electronics from high voltage and high current surges. GL24-HT3-GS08 is the latest addition to the TVS family of products that provide enhanced protection for automotive, industrial and consumer markets.

The GL24-HT3-GS08 is a three terminal, low capacitance, low operating voltage device with an improved surge capability of up to 24V. It offers the highest level of protection from high voltage spikes, ESD (electrostatic discharge) and other transient over-voltage events. The device\'s three terminals are placed adjacent to each other on the chip, allowing for a low profile design with minimal space requirements.

The GL24-HT3-GS08 working principle is based on a voltage breakdown mechanism either across an avalanche diode or a voltage-dependent resistor. It mainly works on the principle of avalanche breakdown. When a specific reverse voltage is applied across the diode, the electric field in the diode increases until it reaches a certain level. At this point, electrons are forced to collide with the nuclei and produce a large number of free electrons.

These free electrons generate a huge current flow in the diode. The current flow through the diode causes the voltage increase to break down the diode. This phenomenon is known as avalanche breakdown, which is the basis of TVS – Diodes function. The large current is then absorbed by the TVS diode to protect the circuits.
