Gas Discharge Tube Arresters (GDT)

Gas Discharge Tube arresters (GDTs) are typically used for protection of sensitive electrical equipment from high voltage sparked or transient currents events. These type of arresters use a GDT filled with low-pressure noble gas placed between electrodes. Different GDTs have different safety ratings and are designed to be able to effectively mitigate and protect electronic components from different voltage level ranges. GDTs are divided into three broad categories based on function and purpose; surge, locator and radio-frequency (RF) arresters.

GTCN26-231M-P05-B Applications Field and Working Principle

GTCN26-231M-P05-B GDTs are specifically designed to combine high-frequency impulse, AC power and RF protections in one comprehensive device. This type of arrester is designed for applications where AC power and high-frequency signals need to be shared on the same line without interference, and are ideal for medium-voltage protection. The GTCN26-231M-P05-B arrester is designed to provide protection from overvoltages generated by lightning strikes, static electricity, power or lightning cross-effects, and to dissipate the lightning energy to a level that does not cause permanent damage or disruption to the host device.The GTCN26-231M-P05-B arrester makes use of two principle mechanisms to ensure protection of the host equipment. Firstly, this arrester is able to limit the rate of rise of a transient surge\'s voltage to a safe level. It does so by charging capacitively and then discharging quickly, where the discharging arc is localised and contained by a separate reduced-pressure gas chamber. Secondly, this arrester is capable of absorbing and dissipating large surge energies through a combination of the capacitive coupling and the resistive-learning characteristics of the GDT.In operation, the GDT contained within the GTCN26-231M-P05-B arrester should be placed between the AC power line and the HF signal line. This allows for the arrester to then be able to act as a wave-shaping inductor, reshaping any high frequency signals travelling on the line, and limiting the peak voltage by shortening the duration of the waveform. This ensures the safe transfer of AC power as well as a suppression of high voltage transients.The GTCN26-231M-P05-B arrester is designed to provide protection for systems rating up to 24 kV, and support insulated power systems of up to 11kV. It is designed to provide over-voltage protection and insulation from lightning over-voltages. It has a rated power frequency tracking resistance of <1Ω, and a breakdown voltage of >50kV. The arrester is designed to operate within a temperature range of -25 to +85 °C, and is designed for outdoor operation.In summary, the GTCN26-231M-P05-B GDT arrester provides lightning surge protection by limiting the rate of rise of the transient surge\'s voltage to a safe level.
