Gas Discharge Tube Arresters (GDTs) are designed to protect electrical systems from dangerous voltage peaks and transients. GDTs are used in a variety of applications, from electrical power systems to telecommunications and other electronic circuits. The GTCR37-900M-R10 is a three-phase protection application designed to protect against transient overvoltages.

The GTCR37-900M-R10 consists of a surge arrestor, an arc chamber for diverting the arc during a surge event, and a capacitor discharge unit. The surge arrestor acts as an insulation barrier between the AC mains and the customer equipment. The arc chamber, or Arc Discharge Mode (ADM), helps prevent current spikes from travelling to the customer equipment. This is important, because current spikes can cause excessive heat, resulting in costly repairs or even fires. The capacitor discharge unit is designed to absorb the energy of the voltage spike or surge, dissipating it into the surroundings. The GTCR37-900M-R10 is designed to protect against transient overvoltages on all three-phase loads. This includes both single-phase and three-phase loads, as well as both phase-to-phase and phase-to-ground overvoltages. It is certified to UL 1449 and CE Mark standards. In addition, the GTCR37-900M-R10 has an advanced thermal-magnetic protection system, to ensure that the GTCR37-900M-R10 will not be overloaded beyond its rated capacity.

GTCR37-900M-R10’s working principle is based on the concept of a “Surge-relief” function, in which the current from the incoming surge is diverged at the point of entry into different directions. This is achieved by using an arc chamber, which causes a resistance in the form of a spark gap inside the tube. This reduces the voltage and current of the surge, diverting it away from the path of the protected equipment.

In addition, the GTCR37-900M-R10 has a capacitor discharge unit which is designed to further absorb the energy of the surge, dissipating it into the surroundings. The capacitor discharge unit ensures that the voltage will never exceed the maximum rated voltage, thus providing optimum protection for the equipment.
