Optoisolators - Transistor, Photovoltaic Output

Optoisolators are devices used to electrically isolate the input signal from the output signal. Isolation is accomplished by opto-electronic means, which prevents it from being affected by suppressed electromagnetic interference. Optoisolators consist of an optoelectronic conversion element connected to an output device.The H11A3SD optoisolator is a photovoltaic output transistor suitable for high voltage and high frequency applications. It consists of a gallium arsenide infrared LED with a phototransistor mounted in a 6-pin dual-in-line package.The LED is the optocoupler’s emitter. It generates a beam of near-infrared light when current is applied to it. The phototransistor, the optocoupler’s receiver, is an NPN bipolar transistor. When the LED emits light, the photo transistor will be activated and supply current to the output.The LED has a typical current transfer ratio (CTR) of 500% at 5 mA, a collector-emitter breakdown voltage of 160 V, and a collector-emitter saturation voltage of 65 mV. It is capable of driving collector currents up to 70 mA and has a maximum collector emitter voltage of 160 V. The photo-transistor has a maximum DC current gain of 600%.The H11A3SD optoisolator provides electrical isolation of up to 1500 Volts. As such, it can be used to protect sensitive circuits from transients or emanating from high voltage power lines or other sources. It is often used in industrial and commercial sectors such as automotive, telecommunications, consumer electronics, and medical applications.The working principle of the H11A3SD optoisolator is simple. When current passes through the LED, it emits a beam of near-infrared light which is detected by the phototransistor. This causes the phototransistor to activate and deliver a signal to the output. This signal is isolated from the input signal, thus providing electrical isolation between the two.In summary, the H11A3SD optoisolator is a photovoltaic output transistor suitable for high voltage and high frequency applications.
