Magnetic sensors and switches are important components in many electronic systems. They are used to provide information concerning the speed and direction of a motor, measure the proximity of two objects, or provide contactless switching. One of the most common types of magnetic sensors and switches is the HAL220JQ-K. This device is a solid-state Hall Effect IC, with a highly precise internal operation, making it applicable to a vast range of applications involving position sensing and current/voltage or inductive switching
The HAL220JQ-K provides excellent linearity, making it the ideal choice for speed and direction sensing applications in motor control systems. The device is able to detect speed and direction via measuring changes in the Hall output voltage, and can output two speeds and two directions, as well as forward & reverse steering commands. Control systems such as motor controllers, human machine interfaces (HMI) and drive systems can then be operated or adjusted accordingly.
The HAL220JQ-K is well suited for automatic object sensing applications. It offers a contactless adjustable range, from several millimetres to more than 10cm, allowing for precise automated object recognition. This feature makes it a great choice for applications such as automatic door openers, robotics, and automated storage systems. The HAL220JQ-K is also resistant to EMI and vibration, increasing its reliability in fields where these conditions may be prominent, such as factory production lines.
The HAL220JQ-K’s contactless switching capability also makes it an outstanding choice for applications involving current sensing and switching. It can detect differences in DC and AC currents, and can be used to monitor the current flow, either as a simple contactless switch or as a controller within a circuit as a current-limiting device. The device’s high symmetry prevents any false triggering, prevents detection errors due to the effect of polarity, and also allows it to be used as a current sensor and switch in automotive power window systems and door locks.
The Hall Effect is a phenomenon in which an external magnetic field causes a voltage to be generated perpendicular to its poles and the direction of current flow. The HAL220JQ-K exploits this phenomenon with a series of Transistor-Transistor Logic (TTL) monitored Hall switches on its die surface. The device is temperature compensated and designed to accurately switch from a wide range of temperatures, voltage, and magnetic flux densities.
The HAL220JQ-K is operated by supplying a voltage into its Vcc pin, and grounding the Vss pin. The Hall sensors are each above a rectangular aperture in the die, and are positioned across the centre line of the die, with the magnetic field having equal strength in all four faces. As the magnetic field changes, the resistor bridge between the sensor and the two outputs will change output voltage accordingly, and the device will produce a digital output.
