Optoisolators, also known as optocouplers, are electrical components used to isolate physically and electrically two parts of an electronic circuit. Isolation prevents potential electrical problems, such as ground loops, that can occur when two parts of the same circuit are in contact. By way of providing isolation, optoisolators can reduce interference, enhance safety levels, and provide improved system reliability and stability. One type of optoisolator is the logic output optoisolator, of which the HCNW137 is an example.

The HCNW137 is a six-pin, double-channel photo-coupler that provides a logic voltage output. When the input voltage is high, the output voltage is low; when the input voltage is low, the output voltage is high. An inverse output logic circuit can be more readily obtained with the HCNW137 than with other optoisolators since the output transistors are NPN and PNP types rather than Darlington pairs. The voltage output of the HCNW137 is also inverted relative to the input.

The main application of the HCNW137 is in control or switching systems, where it is used to transfer status signals between two electrically isolated parts of the circuit. Examples include the transfer of analogue or digital signals across a circuit that has different ground potentials, or the transfer of digital signals between two sections of a video amplifier, or in an audio amplifier.

The HCNW137 has an input current of 10mA and a Maximum collector-emitter voltage of 80V. This wide voltage rating ensures that the optoisolator output can maintain the status of the input signal even when the input voltage changes. The output of the HCNW137 is available in either TTL or CMOS versions. The rise and fall times of the output voltage are very low—around 10 ns—so that switching operations can be performed quickly.

Using an LED as the input, the HCNW137 transfers a current signal to the output while keeping the output isolated from the input. The main advantage of this type of optoisolator is that the input and output are completely electrically isolated, thus reducing the risk of interference from one section of the circuit to the other. This allows the signals to be transmitted across two sections of a circuit with different ground voltages without affecting the output.

The working principle of the HCNW137 is as follows: when the LED is turned on, current is allowed to flow to the photo-transistor, which produces a control voltage. This control voltage is then applied to the output transistor, which is either an NPN (positive logic) or a PNP (negative logic) type. The base current of the output transistor is modulated by the control voltage, thus controlling the output voltage at the collector and emitter. This output voltage is a logic signal, which can then be used to control other devices or circuits.
